Studio Diary #19 - Where I am blown away by conversations sparked by art, fall in love with paper things, and catch Covid (again)
Share
This is where I share what I’ve been up to behind the scenes to move my art career forward - the good, the bad, and the as-yet-to-be-determined.
So, March ended up being a bit of a wash out (the same thing happened last year too, apparently. March just isn’t my month). I had a wonderful trip to Liverpool to visit my best friend, and then I caught Covid on the way home. Again. Yay.
For that reason this is a very short update (for a more in-depth review check out the video above)! But some cool stuff happened too that I wanted to share with you, so let’s see how things shook down in March…
March’s Rose, Bud, & Thorn
The Rose is something that went well, the Thorn is something that didn’t go so well or is challenging, and the Bud is something that is still percolating…
ROSE
Despite travel and illness, work on my new Things Men Have Said To Me Instead Of Hello collection has continued. I’ve shown my works-in-progress to a tiny selection of people so far, and the response I’ve had has been so exciting. It’s really got me thinking about why I make art - everything I create comes from a desire to start a conversation, to show you how I see the world and to see if it resonates. And the conversations being sparked around Things have been incredible - from examining rape culture and the patriarchy to body image and the male gaze. This is what art is all about for me.
BUD
Something that has been on my mind a lot lately is finding more accessible ways for people to collect my art. I strongly believe that collecting art shouldn’t be this elitist thing that is only available to the mega-rich. If you love the work of an artist you should be able to have a piece of their world and/or show your support without breaking the bank.
All that to say, I’ve been playing with a few ideas for low cost ways for you to collect my art, even if you don’t have the space or the budget for one of my paintings. Think zines, books, postcard subscriptions. Lovely little tangible printed paper delights to enchant you.
Watch this space for more on this!
THORN
Having Covid again SUCKED BALLS (and not in a good way).
